Thank you, Doc. This is a lot for this lay person to absorb. I spend so much time becoming a Google ‘expert’ on so many different things that I cringe a little at having to do a deep, hours long dive into Omega-3. As a man trying to get on top of his heart health I’ve begun eating Vegan (1+years now) and exercise daily with weights, cardio and core. It seems adding your recommended amounts of a supplement would support me further. I know it’s not your job to recommend brands but could you steer me through this minefield to companies that are solid and not just selling me ground, powdered rice? Your Substack has been quite an enjoyable and eye opening find for me. Thanks for all you’re doing to help me find better health.
Thank you for the kind words! And don’t worry, no deep dive required. You’re already ahead of the curve by being this intentional about your health. For omega-3, I’d suggest looking for algae-based DHA/EPA supplements and checking for third-party testing certifications like IFOS or USP to ensure quality. I can’t recommend specific brands since they vary by region, but those tips should point you in the right direction.
Hi and thanks for your detailed post! I just had my omega 3 and 6 checked, and as a vegetarian I do get enough omega 3 through seeds, nuts, etc. and 2 eggs daily. But my omega 6 was higher than I wanted and my ratio of 6 to 3 was about 10. I am reducing intake of olive oil and adding flaxseed oil to my diet and will then retest. Will be interesting to see if things move :)
Sounds good. Balancing that omega-6 to omega-3 ratio can make a big difference. Many people overlook its importance. You might also consider walnuts or chia seeds, as they can further support omega-3 intake.
TYSM for these details -- so important regarding fish oil! I need to INCREASE my intake for the potential boost with recovery/muscle soreness from fitness and strength training (has always been my Achilles heel), as well as CIRS (i am a senior athlete). Your input regarding TYPES of fish oil is super helpful! Will be sharing with all my active friends and fam ;D
Thank you for this information. It is an important part of good health. In fact I partnered with a science lab from Norway that has developed an at-home blood test to measure your Omega 6:3 ratio. 97% of Americans, even those taking omega-3, are in a danger zone for chronic information.

I’m glad you found this useful!
A really nice deep dive into the subject.
I've linked to it in my post, "Vegetarians, Take Heed."
Thanks for the mention Mick. Will definitely check out your post!
